The tournament commemorates an important part of the country’s history, making them relive a historic event really happened in the late eighteenth century, when Simon Cacciaconti, Lord of the countryside, after being driven from their lands, back in the village and its armed offers fire and sword the country. Given the reaction of the inhabitants, was, however, forced to leave the territory and since then the inhabitants of Montisi remember the incident with the Giostra di Simone, during which the four horsemen of the Contrade trying to hit a spear with a cheesecloth, effigy Simone. The tournament takes place in an appropriate field, in the countryside of great scenic and environmental impact.
The knights who represent the four quarters, Castle Square, San Martin and Torre, competing armed with spears, trying to hit at the end of a ride at full gallop, the “sieve”, which bears the effigy of Simon left arm a target and on the same shoulder a ring known as “bell” on the right hand while holding the “scourge”, a kind of whip with balls, ready to hit the knight who will not be quick in his attack. In the district of which the knight at the end of the four “career” has scored the most points is awarded a painted banner, called Montisi “cloth”.
The Friday before the Tournament of Simon presents the “cloth” prize that is given to the district that it comes out victorious, which is then carried in procession from the four quarters, dressed in clothes from the period to the streets in a suggestive torchlight until you get to the church of Our Lady of the Snows, where the priest blesses it and hands it to the Tournament Committee.
